GRASTIC Erosion Control  was originally developed for arid, windy terrain. It is a plastic grass ground cover with low maintainence and commercial applications.

 For soft dirt and sand, the plugs are driven in vertically and the blades flop over to provide some shade. The material reflects the Sun and reduces the ground temperatures a bit. When fog or dew is present, moisture collects on the blades as well. 

 Installations include highway median strips, gullies and around airports. It  slows sand dune migration and sheds off the occasional downpour. As a low water, no water functional landscape, GRASTIC Erosion Control is worth a look. 

 In the river deltas and wetlands, BAYOU BACKER Erosion Control is a larger GRASTIC plug stuck in the mud to absorb wave energy and catch sediments. Both products are scaleable and the Plastic can have a variety of characteristics including bio-degradability.
